Stitching Stillness

Stitching Stillness: Creating Two Disappearing Nine-Patch Quilts

There’s something grounding about cutting fabric into perfect squares and stitching them back together in unexpected ways. The
disappearing nine-patch quilt block reminds us that beauty often comes from transformation—the breaking apart and reimagining of what once seemed complete.

This past week, I finished two versions of the same quilt: each top made with nine fat quarters of sunny yellow and darker shades of blue fabric. My friend Kathrine showed me this quick method for a quilt top that takes less than an hour to make. Yet, as I pieced each section, pressed the seams, and then sliced the block into quarters, I found myself reflecting on change. Nothing truly disappears in quilting or life; it simply shifts position, finding new balance in color and form.

Then I was rather surprised that I arranged the two tops differently. What? I thought! Oh Goodness I better get the seam ripper but then I paused.  Why do I have to continue with the same pattern in quilting or life?

Following a pattern exactly can feel safe. But changing it means stepping into uncertainty—you don’t know exactly how it will turn out. Mindfulness teaches us to be okay with not knowing, to appreciate the process rather than the outcome. Each adjustment becomes a small act of trust.

As I worked on my two quilts—I realized they reflected two parts of myself. Some days I need the calm of the quiet blues; other days, I reach for the shimmer of gold. Each stitch, each rearranged block, reminds me that life, like quilting, is a series of gentle transformations.

Patterns change all the time—in fabric, in seasons, in us. Quilting teaches that when something is rearranged, it doesn’t lose its beauty; it simply becomes something new. Recognizing that truth in your creative process helps you carry it into daily life. Ah Awareness!

Two quilts, stitched in stillness.
Two reminders that transformation can be beautiful—especially when we stay present for it.

Mug Rugs

Mug Rugs.

Fill your cup or at least have something to put it on!

I want to invite you to take a deep breath with me.

Right here, right now. Let your shoulders drop. Let the world slow down, just a little.

Because today, I want to talk about something we often forget to give ourselves — self-care. Not the kind we give to others — we’re wonderful at that. Quilters are natural givers. We wrap babies in love, send comfort through stitches to grieving families, and create heirlooms that whisper, “You are cherished.”

But what about you?

What about the woman or man behind the needle?

That’s where the mug rug comes in.

Yes — the humble mug rug. Small. Quiet. Often made from scraps. Just big enough for a warm cup and a cookie. Not flashy. Not fussy. But full of heart.

To me, a mug rug is a little quilt with a big message — and that message is:

You matter, too.

A Moment to Pause

In a world that moves fast, where schedules overflow and perfection is praised, self-care can feel indulgent — even selfish. But let’s be clear:

Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s sacred.

Self-care is choosing to stop — even for five minutes — and sip your tea slowly. It’s noticing how soft the fabric feels beneath your fingers. It’s letting your hands create something beautiful, not because you have to, but because you want to.

And sometimes, it’s just sitting in silence with a mug rug under your favorite cup and letting yourself be.

Quilting as a Love Language

You see, quilting and self-care aren't separate ideas. They’re woven together, just like the threads in our work. Quilting teaches us patience, forgiveness (hello, seam ripper), and the value of progress over perfection.

Even when life feels messy, when the seams don’t line up, or when the colors don’t match the plan — we keep stitching. That’s resilience. That’s healing. That’s hope.

And isn’t that what self-care is?
Showing up for yourself with grace, not guilt.

So, here’s my invitation to you today:

Let’s make a mug rug just for you.

Not for a gift. Not for a sale. But for you.

Let it live on your table, or beside your sewing machine. Let it remind you every day that you deserve warmth, softness, and joy — just as much as anyone else.

Let it be a symbol of balance.
A boundary in fabric form that says,
"This space, this cup of tea, this moment — is mine."

In the end, a mug rug won’t fix everything. But it can be a tiny reminder that we are more than what we do for others — we are worthy of the same love we so freely give.

So let’s care for ourselves, one small square at a time.

Let’s quilt our way home — to ourselves.

Agate Nightlights

Light vs. Dark

The last two weeks have been emotional and stressful for many. It was difficult already with Covid but the riots at the Capitol have been heartbreaking and disgusting. I have been struggling with my own darkness such as past trauma, watching people destroy instead of peaceful protest, and some really good people that have made bad choices in the heat of the moment.

My faulty thinking is that if I see or hear something good then it feels like a bit of balance in the world replaces that darkness . Yet, I saw this quote by Francis Bacon, “In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present.”  This is so true, I would not be as grateful for the connections I have with friends and family if I did not miss them at times. We would not understand the miracle of life if we have not had an experience of loss.

So.....

I wanted to bring a bit of light back into the world with some handmade nightlights. If it is dark then for the love of Merlin turn on some light!

Each nightlight was made with stained glass with an agate placed in the middle.  I chose the glass color that I thought complimented the agates.

The butterfly embellishment was added with the intention/mindful reminder to be free from fear.

Agates are believed to transform negativity into positivity. Some believe they can enhance mental function, improve concentration, and enhance perception and analytical abilities. It is a soothing and calming gemstone.  I do believe what we think and believe also plays a huge factor in our lives and well being.

These night lights will make a great addition to any home whether it be a bathroom or bedroom. It also makes the perfect gift! They are available with free shipping at our Etsy Shop.

Oprah Winfrey said, “You have to find what sparks a light in you so that you in your own way can illuminate the world.”

So go spread some light and I would really enjoy hearing below how you choose to spread light in the world!
